Why More Dacorum Schools Are Switching to Independent Photographers

If you’ve ever sat through a school portrait day with a national provider — the numbered tickets, the forty-five second sessions, the backdrop that’s been in a van since 2019 — you’ll understand why schools are increasingly looking for something different.

I’ve been photographing schools and nurseries across Dacorum for a number of years now, and the question I get most often from school administrators isn’t about price. It’s about experience. Parents are more discerning about photography than they used to be. They know what a good photograph looks like. And they’re less willing to pay for one that doesn’t look like their child.

What’s different about working with an independent photographer

The most obvious difference is time. National providers move fast because they have to — they’re covering dozens of schools on a tight schedule. An independent photographer working with a single school on a given day can take longer with each child, work with different setups, and produce images that actually capture character rather than a generic smile-at-the-camera portrait.

There’s also continuity. When the same photographer comes back year after year, they know the school. They know the staff. They know which children need a longer settling-in period and which ones perform for the camera the moment they sit down. That familiarity produces better photographs — and a less stressful portrait day for everyone involved.

How the pricing works

At In The Frame, there’s no charge to the school. The session is provided free, and parents choose whether to purchase digital downloads or prints — from as little as £20 — after seeing the images. No upfront commitment, no pressure, no unsold packages going in a drawer.

Images are GDPR compliant, delivered digitally to the school for distribution.

Class and group photographs

Individual portraits, sibling shots, and class group photographs are all available as part of a school portrait day. Year group and whole-school photographs can also be arranged — it’s worth discussing the scope at the initial conversation so the day is planned correctly.
