Everything you wanted to know about newborn photography!
This month’s blog we’re dedicating to one of the most popular shoot styles In The Frame Photography offer – newborn photography, and answering the questions you have.
So let’s start at the most important aspect…
Absolutely – when performed by a trained professional, the photoshoot is a smooth and efficient process, with baby’s comfort and safety paramount. Beyond the extensive training undergone as a photographer, Roz has taken many extensive courses in newborn photography as well as a series of 1-1 mentoring sessions with leading newborn photographers. In addition to training, Roz has 5 children herself, providing her with invaluable, unteachable experience!
The poses she uses are all taken and evolved from positions babies take in the womb, and when newly born they are perfectly limber so none of the poses cause discomfort. All the props, sets, and equipment is chosen, are selected for safety first, comfort second and aesthetics third.
The window for newborn photography is 0-14 days; during this time they still have that scrunched up look and it’s easier to settle babies into gentle sleep to enable to create poses that simulate them being in the womb.
The poses Roz uses in newborn photography are selected very carefully. They are mimicked on, or evolved from positions babies naturally assume when still in the womb. Being so young, they come naturally to the baby and are in no way forced or uncomfortable.
Of course, many of the poses used can be too difficult for the baby to hold by themselves – balancing their head for example. This is where the more advanced photography techniques come in – the majority of images from the session are composite images, in which mum or dad supports the baby with a hand or finger which is digitally removed after.
Here are some poses from recent shoots:

We suggest booking your session in advance, 7-10 days from baby’s due date. The booking is flexible, though, so we can adjust it if baby arrives early/late.
If you have any concerns or questions about when to book, just drop us a message and we’ll be happy to answer any questions
Roz poses newborn shoots at the In The Frame Photography Studio in Hemel Hempstead. The quiet studio in Hemel Hempstead Old Town allows for greater control over the environment and has the props, sets and equipment on hand to perfect the shoot. Naturally, we always aim to keep the studio at the optimal temperature, to keep baby comfortable and safe.
The newborn session covers up to 2-4 hours. The shoot goes on the schedule of the baby – waiting for our star to settle, feed or slip off to sleep can change the duration.
Of course – siblings are welcome to join in at the end of the shoot – but because of how long it can take to photograph a newborn session, older brothers and sisters are likely to get bored/irritable if there before the last 20 minutes or so.
Roz’s signature newborn style is simple/neutral photos. They pull all the focus to the baby, with soft surroundings which gives them a timeless feel.
The In The Frame Photography Studio has a range of sets, props, and equipment to help set the photos too, as you can see in a sample of our photos below.
The first step is relaxation – the session always goes better when everyone is calm and relaxed. We’ll send you an information sheet after booking, with helpful advice about what to wear and what to expect. Much of the session is based on the timetable of the baby, so we’ll add a few tips and tricks to have the little one prepared too.
These are our standard packages for Newborn Photography, but if you don’t find what you’re looking get in touch and we can create something specifically tailored to you
Deposit/booking fee £50 to secure a date, non-refundable if cancelled.
